A Moment to Remember is a Korean heartfelt, romance film about a love that develops between two unlikely strangers. One day, a heart-broken Su-jin has a bizarre, chance encounter in a convenience store with a stranger, the rugged Cheol-su. This moment later becomes the thread of memory that holds their lives together when everything is falling apart.
The relationship between Su-jin, the daughter of a wealthy businessman and Cheol-su, the construction worker infamous for his arrogance; develops after he heroically saves her bag from a thief in the street one day. Su-jin becomes fascinated by the audacious yet obscure Cheol-su, and finds any opportunity to see him. The unlikely pair fall in love, to the surprise of Su-jin’s friends and family, and build a life together.
The story takes a tragic turn when the forgetful and clumsy Su-jin starts to forget more than she usually would, from losing things to the forgetting the route to work. She tells her friends her concerns about her forgetfulness and they laugh, not taking her seriously. The unsettled Su-jin goes to see a psychiatrist who diagnoses her with a rare form of Alzheimers, a debilitating disease that causes people to “lose their mind and then their body” he says. She is devastated and cannot bring herself tell Cheol-su for what it will mean for them. But soon he notices that things are not right with her himself and finds out about her illness.
Cheol-su is devastated by the news but refuses to separate. They stay together with Cheol-su desperately trying to hold onto Su-jin’s memories for her. But as her memory deteriorates, their relationship becomes increasingly difficult for Cheol-su to cope with. One day Cheol-su breaks down when Su-jin confuses him with her ex-lover and he questions if he is even the one she loves.
In the end, Cheol-su takes Su-jin back to the convenience store where their paths first crossed, back to the moment they first met. She does not remember the store. It feels familiar, on the tip of the iceberg of her memory but no matter how hard she tries, she can’t remember. Su-jin steps into the shop and there are her family – her father, mother and sister who are who are crying and Cheol-su’s mother and old teacher, all there for her. Su-jin asks Cheol-su where this place is and if it is heaven. Surrounded by love, it feels like a beautiful dream to Su-jin. All she feels and remembers is love.
A Moment to Remember tells a tale of an enduring love that stands the testament of one of life’s most difficult trials. It evokes the thought of what is really important in life and testifies that love always wins. There is a saying “everything will be okay in the end, if it’s not, then it’s not the end” that resonates with the film. In the end, no matter what happens, what matters is how much we loved.
